平安～鎌倉時代 熊谷市立熊谷図書館所蔵
1180年（治承4年） 熊谷直実（くまがいなおざね）※1が、軍功により源頼朝から「向かい鳩」の家紋を賜りました。
1186年（文治2年） 一の谷合戦で熊谷直実が平家の敦盛を討つお話は、文楽や歌舞伎の人気狂言「熊谷陣屋」で上演されます。舞台で使用される陣幕には「向かい鳩」の紋が漢数字の「八」のように描かれており、のちの「鳩居堂」と関連があります。
1193年（建久4年） 熊谷直実は出家して、法然上人の弟子になり、「蓮生（れんせい）」と名乗りました。
江戸時代 1663年（寛文3年） 熊谷直実から数えて20代目の熊谷直心（じきしん）が、京都寺町の本能寺門前にて、薬種商「鳩居堂」を始めました。屋号は儒学者・室鳩巣（むろきゅうそう）※2の命名です。由来は中国の古い時代の民謡集『詩経』の召南の篇にある「維鵲有巣、維鳩居之」で、カササギの巣に託卵する鳩に、「店はお客様のもの」という謙譲の意を込めたものです。また、室鳩巣の雅号と熊谷家の家紋「向かい鳩」にちなんだ屋号でもあります。

- >>165 1789年頃（寛政元年） 文人墨客（頼山陽※3、池大雅、田能村竹田など）と深く交際するようになり、筆・墨も業とし研究を命じられ、弊社独特の製筆技術で中国製をしのぐものであったと賛を寄せています。この頃より筆、墨の製造が始まりました。
1800年代初期（寛政12年） 儒学者 頼山陽の指導で筆や墨の改良が試みられました。望み通りの品ができたことを喜んだ山陽はその雄大な筆蹟をもって自ら「鳩居」や「筆研紙墨皆極精良」と揮毫したり、「鳩居堂記」という長文の巻物を残して下さいました。
1833年（天保4年） 店外からは見えませんが、屋根のてっぺんにある双鳩の鬼瓦には「瓦師 甚兵衛 天保四年八月彫」と記されています。
1850年前後（嘉永3年前後） ４代目熊谷直恭は、文人墨客との交流のほか社会奉仕にも志が篤く、有信堂という種痘所(種痘とは天然痘の予防接種のこと)を設けたり、コレラ対策に力を注いだりしましたが、自らも1859年、コレラに感染して多彩な一生を終えました。
1858年（安政5年） 7代目熊谷直孝42歳の折に板倉槐堂により撮影されたもの。本湿板写真は、当時としては大判で高度な技術によるものであり、京都市内では最古のものと云われています。
1860年前後（万延1年） 熊谷直孝は、直恭の意思や行動を受け継ぎ、国事に奔走したり、教育事業に熱中したりして、有信堂に寺子屋を少し組織化した教育塾を設置し、これが全国で最初の小学校開設の基になり、明治2年(1869年)柳池小学校が開校されました。
没後の1903年には「贈従五位」の栄誉を授けられました。
明治時代 1877年（明治10年） 直恭以来の社会奉仕や国事事業への貢献が認められ、8代目熊谷直行は、太政大臣三條実美（さんじょうさねとみ）公より、900年来 伝承されてきた「宮中御用の合せ香」の秘方をすべて伝授されました。 平安朝に生まれた日本の香りは、一子相伝として今もなお、鳩居堂により正しく伝えられております。そしてこの雅やかな薫香線香をこれからも大切に守り伝えていくことが私たちの使命と心しております。 - 172 : 公共放送名無しさん: 2025/12/06(土) 14:00:34.33 ID:Mt/h7eav

1930年頃（昭和5年頃） 写真の日付は、昭和9年12月6日。 この頃の工房の風景です。 当時は、まだほとんどが手作業でした。 鳩居堂名古屋支店。現在はありませんが、当時、名古屋鉄砲町1丁目に出店。 この頃の銀座風景、東京鳩居堂と銀座4丁目交差点です。懐かしい路面電車(都電)が走っていました。
「ころばぬさきの要心棒 かまれた時の蛇頂石（じゃちょうせき）」まむし、むかで、蜂、蚤、蚊、くらげ、毒鼠、狂犬など毒虫や獣類に咬まれたり、刺されたりした時に傷口にあてると毒気を吸い取ると言われていた薬石です。
明治から昭和初期にかけて製造販売していました。
1942年（昭和17年） 個人組織であった鳩居堂を3つの法人に分割し、製造部門＝鳩居堂製造株式会社、販売部門＝株式会社京都鳩居堂・株式会社東京鳩居堂としました。
1952年（昭和27年） 書の手本として鳩居堂が保有している、藤原行成筆『仮名消息』が国宝に指定されました。
1954年（昭和29年） 1891年宮内省御用達制度が定められ、1954年に制度が廃止されるまで、その任を拝命していました。 1965年頃（昭和40年頃） 東京鳩居堂、銀座本店を改築及び模様替えしました。 1982年頃（昭和57年頃） 東京鳩居堂、銀座本店を改築しました。ページトップへ

1180 (Jisho 4): Kumagai Naozane*1 received the "Mukai Hato" family crest from Minamoto no Yoritomo in recognition of his military achievements.
1186 (Bun'ei 2): The story of Kumagai Naozane's defeat of Taira no Atsumori at the Battle of Ichinotani is performed in the popular Bunraku and Kabuki play "Kumagaya Jin'ya." The "Mukai Hato" crest is depicted on the stage's tenm curtain, resembling the Chinese numeral "八" (eight), and is associated with the later "Kyukodo."
1193 (Kenkyu 4): Kumagai Naozane became a monk and disciple of Honen Shonin, taking the name "Rensei."
Edo Period: 1663 (Kanbun 3): Kumagai Jikishin, the 20th generation of the family after Kumagai Naozane, opened the drug store "Kyukyodo" in front of the Honnoji Temple gate in Teramachi, Kyoto. The store name was given by Confucian scholar Muro Kyūso*2. Its origins lie in the Zhao Nan chapter of the ancient Chinese folk song collection "Shijing," which says, "A magpie has a nest, a pigeon resides there." This refers to the pigeon laying its eggs in a magpie's nest, conveying the humble message that "the store belongs to the customer." The store name also references Muro Kyūso's artistic name and the Kumagai family crest, "a pigeon facing each other."
1700s (Genroku 13): As medicinal ingredients share the same meaning as "incense," the company began producing incense sticks. At the same time, the company began importing and selling stationery for calligraphy and painting from China, a source of medicinal ingredients. He established a school at Yushindo that was a slightly more structured version of a temple school. This became the basis for the opening of the first elementary school in the country, and Yanagiike Elementary School opened in 1869 (Meiji 2).
Posthumously in 1903, he was awarded the honor of Junior Fifth Rank.
Meiji Period: 1877 (Meiji 10): In recognition of the community service and contributions to national affairs that had been made since Naoyasu's time, Grand Minister of State, Sanjo Sanetomi, taught the 8th Kumagai Naoyuki all the secrets of the "combined incense used at the Imperial Court" that had been handed down for 900 years.Japanese fragrances, which were born during the Heian period, are still passed down correctly to this day by Kyukodo, passed down from father to son.
